The house with apricot flowers, Jo Hee-ryong, 19th century

In the nineteenth century Joseon, the people of the middle class also possessed capital and became a life that was not so different from the nobility. By this means, the middle class started to enjoy art, and it led the increase of art. Consequently, there are more painters from the middle class as well. Jo Hee-ryong, the painter of this work is also from the middle class.

Kim Jeong-hui, who was one of the most famous painter in the literary artist´s style, has criticized that this work has too much like a painting. Unlike Kim Jeong-hui 's paintings, which are abstract and paintings like writings, the painting is full of drawings without white space. In addition, the apricot flowers are made more beautiful by making the circumference of flowers darker then the apricot flowers. In the midst of the apricot flower season, early spring, there is a person enjoying a relaxing time at home alone adds serenity. In the painting, a tendency of a magnificent painting is melted, that were popular in China's Qing dynasty. On the right-hand side, the painter left the place for the poem, which is well harmonised into the scenery.

This work is supposed to be borrowed from the story of the Chinese Song Dynasty ' lín bū '. ‘lín bū’ is a person who pursues a life as a date by taking the apricot flowers as his wife and crane as a son. In the 19th century, when the country was in turmoil, this picture shows the willing of peace and ambience they had hoped for.
